Glittering stalactites and stalagmites are the main attraction at the Fontirou Caves. The intricate web of underground grottoes, caverns and chambers near Agen in the heart of the Lot Valley was first discovered in 1905, when a plough-pulling ox put its foot down a hole.
Over a period of 30 million years, mineral deposits have shaped a hidden world of rock formations beneath the limestone plateau. Dramatic stalactites and stalagmites, curtains, draperies and columns are spread out over seven chambers. Amid this surreal subterranean landscape of opaque calcite and aragonite, prehistoric remnants have been unearthed, from 20,000-year-old buffalo bones to the fossilised fang of a sabre-toothed tiger.

Visits (approximately 40 minutes) takes place under the guidance of a guide, in a friendly atmosphere.
